Memory verses for this week are from 1 John 1:3-4.
3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
I’ve gotten feedback from people that this endeavor (while wonderful and joy-filled) is HARD WORK! Building any new habit requires intentionality at first, but I promise you will reap the rewards if you stick with it!
Memorization tips:
Listen to Amy Doerfler’s music for 1 John (scroll down) at least once a day. I listen on the way to and from school with my kids. You can listen in the shower, while cooking dinner, cleaning your house, working out, etc.
Change your phone background to the verses for the the week. You can find a new background picture to use in the Facebook group every week. If you aren’t on social media and would like to receive them, comment below or respond to this email.
Write your verses! There are people in this group committed to writing the memory work every day. Once a week, I recommend writing the chapter to-date. This is the tried and true method I used in school.
Post verses around your house that you’ve written out or printed. You can place verses on your bathroom mirror, behind the kitchen sink, or even taped on the shower wall in a ziplock bag (upside down so water doesn’t get in).
Memorize with an accountability partner or enlist someone to listen to you once a week.
Read the entire chapter or book once a day.
Recite with the YouVersion app audio.
Use the Versify app. This is a great tool to help you make the most of your screen time! You can both learn and quiz yourself in a variety of ways.
Create a routine and stick to it at least through the first chapter. While I sincerely believe in working smarter instead of harder, you will have to put in some level of effort to be successful. If you can build a new habit, you can memorize 1 John! Consistency is key!
If you have other memorization tips, drop them in the comments or feel free to share in the Facebook group to help and encourage others. I would love to hear what methods are working for you!
Commentary
John further establishes his credibility by again telling his readers that he is an eye witness to the events of Jesus’s life and ministry and that he has good news to declare. John’s message goes beyond the forgiveness of sins and points to the fellowship we have as believers with each other and with the Lord.
There is so much JOY being part of the body of Christ and in fellowship with other Christians! Even as unique individuals in different stages of life, we share the bond of Christ.
If you are not part of a local church, I encourage you to find one! If you are in central Ohio, I can give you suggestions for Bible centered, Gospel preaching churches. Consider this your personal invitation to New Albany Presbyterian Church! Pastors David Milroy and Ken Rathburn will be preaching through the book of 1 John starting in February. I will share sermon links in the coming weeks.
Grace and peace to you!
